Mustang, which name is literally translates to "fertile plain", once used to be a Lo kingdom. Mustang sits on the northern region of Nepal towards the Nepal-China border. Geographically the part of Tibetan plateau, obvious cultural influence of Tibet can be seen in the lifestyle of the people of Mustang. Thus, Mustang is also sometimes called "Little Tibet".
Before it was open for tourists in year 1992, Mustang remained a mystery for many centuries. Thus, after Nepal opened it for tourists, Mustang captured the imagination of thousands of tourists worldwide. In no time, Mustang became one of the preferred destinations for tourists. Visits to Mustang are still strictly regulated by authorities.
The landmass of Mustang consists of dry lands with huge rocks containing thousands of caves. The multicultural society here consists of Tibetan, Gurung and Thakali people. Many parts of Mustang remain unexplored, with just around 800 tourists visiting this place every year. Mustang has long been the trade link between Tibet and Nepal. It became an independent monarchy in 1380 and remained so until the Government of Nepal ceased it in 2008.
During Mustang Trans-Himalayan Trek, you will have the chance to explore ancient monasteries, mysterious caves, and behold the lively art and architecture of the local population that have lived on the lap of the Himalayas for centuries. The trek trails to Lo-Manthang will pass through the desolately barren landscape of the Mustang region along steep rocky paths. The views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other majestic Himalayan peaks leave everlasting impression.
